Police Officer of the Year

We presented the 39th Police Officer of the Year Award to Waterloo’s Officer Greg Kemp. Mayor Tim Hurley started the program off by acknowledging Officer Kemp’s special dedication to the job.

Mayor Hurley went on to tell Officer Kemp - “Our city is a safer place to live and work due to your efforts…”. The Mayor also acknowledged the Club for doing the award program each year.

Then Chief Jennings came forward to introduce Officer Kemp. First the Chief briefly described the process that the Department used to select officer Kemp. He told us that a list of nominees are submitted by the people in the department. There were several fine nominees this year, Tom said.

It was obvious right away that Officer Kemp should receive the award.

Officer Kemp supervises two patrols on the second shift as the Department’s Field Training Officer. In this role as FTO, Officer Kemp works with new members of the police force to get them oriented to the job—an especially critical job given the large number of retirements (25-30) the department will experience in the next couple of years. Chief Jennings presented Officer Kemp with a service ribbon, plaque and a weekend package at the Grand Harbor facility in Dubuque.

Then it was Officer Kemp’s turn. He thanked everyone for their support. He talked a little about his work on the force. He likes being on second shift— “where the action is …” as he put it. He spoke of being impressed with the way the folks on his shift worked together this summer helping the community residents through all the bad weather. Great to know we have fine young men like Officer Kemp there to help when we need them.
